Building for the Elderly

Durch das anhaltende Geburtendefizit und die steigende Lebenserwartung altert die Bevölkerung Deutschlands und der meisten Nachbarländer immer stärker. Unsere Gesellschaft sieht sich einem demographischen Wandel gegenüber, der in Zukunft nahezu alle Bereiche beeinflussen wird. Während Branchen wie etwa Finanzdienstleister, Reiseveranstalter oder Bildungsträger das Potential dieser Entwicklung längst erkannt haben und ihre Produkte und Angebote schon jetzt gezielt auf die Bedürfnisse und Wünsche älterer Menschen zuschneiden, sind in der Bau- und Immobilienbranche derartige Konzepte bislang leider oft noch Mangelware. Sicher ist aber, dass statt Kindergärten und Schulen künftig verstärkt Alten- und Pflegeheime sowie Wohngebäude beziehungsweise -anlagen für Senioren gebaut werden. Das Interesse an diesem Thema nimmt jedoch stetig zu – und damit sicher auch der Wunsch nach einer höheren Gestaltungsqualität der Bauten. AW 212 stellt wie immer ausgewählte Beispiele und Projekte sowie aktuelle Wettbewerbsentscheidungen vor.

A stagnant birth rate combined with increasing life expectancy has lead to an aging population in Germany as in most of its neighbouring countries. Society is faced with demographic changes that will before long encompass all aspects of life. Industries such as financial service providers, travel organisers and educational organisations have long acknowledged the commercial potential of this development and are tailoring their products to meet the demands and aspirations of the older generation. However, there is as yet little evidence of appropriate innovative concepts in the building and real estate sector. Yet one thing is for sure: Instead of nurseries and schools we shall in future have to build more retirement and nursing homes as well as buildings and housing centres specifically designed to meet the needs of senior citizens. Still, the interest in this particular field is growing, followed by a call for more attention to be paid to the design of such buildings. AW 212 will showcase selected examples and projects and indicate trends gleaned from recent competitions.
